Based on research, noise is one of the biggest complaints from residents in multi-family projects. The most common issue is footfall impact noise from walking and movement on the floor above another residence. Noise complaints are also common from airborne noise, such as televisions or loud conversations. Plumbing and building systems, such as wastewater, elevators, or ventilation systems also contribute to noise complaints. All of these issues significantly impact the residents’ overall comfort and the perception of quality of their home. Unfortunately, building code requirements for sound transmission and impact insulation between units are insufficient to ensure adequate acoustical privacy and there are currently no code requirements for noise from plumbing or building systems within the building.
