One of the unique aspects of student housing projects is that students living in the same unit are not family members. Sound isolation within the same apartment unit is not standard practice, but it is critical in student housing projects. Sound isolation between rooms within the same unit provides freedom from distraction between rooms and allows one student to quietly study, while another student in the other room is gaming, listening to music, watching the TV, or other distracting activities.

The program of student housing projects has expanded exponentially over the years. In addition to dorm rooms, facilities may also have dining rooms, grab-and-go or convenience markets, lounges, music rooms, game rooms, study rooms, etc., each adding unique challenges which expands the acoustical scope of design work.
